Concrete or clay, interlocking or plain: getting the tile right for your house
Most houses in and around Hull are covered in one of two kinds of tile. Concrete interlocking tiles are large, overlap at the sides and are common on post-war semis and newer estates. Plain tiles, in clay or concrete, are small, laid double-lapped and found on many older terraces and villas. Each needs its own batten gauge, fixings and ridge detail, so we start by identifying exactly what your roof has.
Re-tiling is the right call when the tiles themselves are spalling, laminating or have lost their nibs, or when the battens and felt beneath them have failed. Where the tiles are still sound and the trouble is local, we replace individual tiles instead, sourcing a matching profile and colour from current ranges or reclaimed stock so the repair does not stand out from the rest of the slope.
On every tile roof we look closely at the ridges. Mortar-bedded ridges crack and loosen with age, while a dry ridge system fixes each ridge tile mechanically, with no mortar to wash out. Some owners prefer the traditional look of mortar on an older house, and that is a fair choice too. We will explain which suits your roof and set it out in the written quote.

See your roof from above before you decide
Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.
It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Why choose Especially Roofing for tile roofs?
What affects your tile roof quote?
Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
Tile type
Concrete interlocking tiles cover a roof quickly. Clay plain tiles need far more tiles per square metre and more time to lay.
Matching availability
A tile still in production is simple to match. A discontinued profile may need reclaimed stock, which can take time to find.
Ridge and verge finish
Dry ridge and dry verge systems and traditional mortar finishes differ in both materials and labour.
Extent of the work
Replacing a handful of tiles, one slope or the whole roof are very different jobs, and the scaffolding needed changes with them.
