New Roofs

Slate lasts for generations when the nails and battens holding it are sound

Natural slate is one of the longest-lived roof coverings there is, which is why many Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Hull still carry their original slates. What usually fails first is not the slate but the iron nails holding it, which rust through and let slates slide out of place. Man-made fibre cement slates are lighter and more uniform, and suit newer houses or roofs where budget matters more than heritage.

Re-slating is the right call when many slates are slipping at once, a sign the nails have corroded across the roof, or when the battens beneath have rotted. Sound natural slates can often be stripped, sorted and reused alongside matched reclaimed ones. Where only a few slates have cracked or slipped, we fit replacements individually instead, using a tingle to secure any slate that cannot be nailed.

Slate roofs depend on good lead at the chimney, valleys and abutments, so we check and renew that detailing as part of the work rather than leaving tired lead to fail a year later. Every option, from reusing your own slates to a full man-made covering, is set out on the written quote so you can compare them side by side.

See your roof from above before you decide

Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.

It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Pricing

What affects your slate roof quote?

Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

01

Natural or man-made

New natural slate costs more than fibre cement and takes longer to fix, while reclaimed slate varies with what is available.

02

Reusing your slates

Keeping sound original slates cuts material cost but adds sorting time, and the share that can be reused only shows once stripped.

03

Lead detailing

Chimneys, valleys and dormers each need lead, and the amount on your roof can make a noticeable difference.

04

Access and height

Three-storey terraces and steep roofs need more scaffolding than a typical two-storey semi.

FAQs

Slate roof questions answered

Why do my slates keep slipping?

On most older slate roofs the slates are fine but the iron nails holding them have rusted away. Once that starts, more slates follow, because the nails were all fitted at the same time and have aged together. A few can be refixed with tingles, but when slipping is widespread re-slating is usually the lasting fix.

Can you reuse my original slates?

Often a good share of them, yes. We strip carefully, test and sort the slates, and reuse the sound ones, making up the shortfall with matched reclaimed or new slate. Laminated or thin slates are discarded. How many can be saved only becomes clear once the roof is stripped, and we explain this on the quote.

Should I choose natural or man-made slate?

Natural slate has a very long lifespan and suits older houses, particularly where the look of the street matters. Man-made fibre cement slate is lighter, more uniform and costs less to buy. Both work well when fixed correctly. We will show you samples and explain the trade-off for your particular house.

How long does re-slating take and what affects the cost?

Timescale and cost both depend on the roof size, height and pitch, the choice of slate, how many originals can be reused and how much lead detailing is needed. We give an expected timescale and an itemised price on the written quote after the inspection, so you can plan around the work.

How do I get a quote for slate roof work?

Book a free drone roof inspection, which gives you a clear visual report of every slate, ridge and lead detail without anyone needing to walk on the roof. We then prepare a free, no-obligation written quote, with guarantee details confirmed on the quotation itself.
