Moss Removal

Moss holds water against your tiles

Moss grows where a roof stays damp and shaded, so north-facing slopes and roofs under trees are the usual places to find it. On its own it looks untidy, but thick moss acts like a sponge. It keeps the tiles wet, lifts their edges as it builds up underneath, and in cold weather that trapped water can freeze and crack them. It also washes into your guttering and blocks the outlets.

We remove moss by hand, scraping it off the tiles and out of the joints without damaging the surface. High-pressure washing can strip the surface from some concrete tiles and push water up under the laps, so any further cleaning is chosen to suit your tiles rather than applied the same way on every roof. If we think a method is wrong for your roof, we will not use it.

Once the tiles are clear, we take the moss and debris out of the gutters and downpipes and apply a treatment to slow regrowth. Being on the roof also gives us a close look at every slope, so we check for cracked or slipped tiles, worn ridge mortar and tired flashings while we are there, and tell you what we find rather than leaving it until the next leak.

See your roof from above before you decide

Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.

It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Pricing

What affects your moss removal quote?

Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

01

Roof size and pitch

A small terraced roof clears quickly. Larger, steeper or multi-slope roofs take longer and need more care to work on safely.

02

How heavy the growth is

A light covering is quicker to remove than moss that has built up thickly over many years and spread into every joint.

03

Access

Roofs above conservatories, extensions or awkward ground may need scaffolding or a tower rather than ladders and roof ladders.

04

Repairs found along the way

Cracked or slipped tiles found during the work are pointed out and quoted for, so you only pay for repairs you agree to.

Products We Fit

FAQs

Moss removal questions answered

Is moss on my roof actually a problem?

A thin layer is mostly cosmetic, but thick moss keeps the tiles damp, can lift tile edges and regularly blocks guttering. Over a few winters the trapped moisture can contribute to frost damage on some tiles. If the moss is building up or your gutters keep overflowing, it is worth having it cleared.

How long does moss removal take?

Many houses can be done in a day, a small terraced roof sometimes in less, while large or steep roofs and jobs needing scaffolding take longer. Weather plays a part too, as we need reasonably dry conditions to work on the roof safely. We give you an expected timescale on your written quote.

Will the moss come back?

On a roof that stays damp and shaded, moss will eventually return. The treatment we apply is there to slow that regrowth, and cutting back overhanging branches helps as well. Keeping the gutters clear and having the roof looked over every few years makes it far easier to stay on top of.

What affects the cost of moss removal?

The size and pitch of the roof, how thick the moss is, access, and whether scaffolding is needed all affect the price. Gutter clearing and the treatment are part of the job. If we find damaged tiles, we quote for those repairs separately so you can choose whether to go ahead.

How do I get a quote for moss removal?

Start with a free drone inspection. The images show how much moss there is, where it is heaviest and whether any tiles look damaged, which means the free, no-obligation written quote that follows is based on your roof rather than a guess.
